How Utah's Peaks and Mountains got their Names

The Utah Ski Season is almost here! Very soon, people will be flocking to the slopes to take advantage of the greatest snow on earth. Whether you'll be skiing in Park City, Alta, or any other Utah ski area, you want to be informed about Utah's mountains and peaks. For example, how did they get their names? This post will help answer that questions for some of Utah's most famous peaks.

Mount Timpanogos - According to the National Park Service, "Digging deeper into the derivation of Timpanogos, it is believed that the name was in reference to the Timpanogots Ute Tribe and translates as rock (tumpi-), and water mouth or canyon (panogos)."

Mount Olympus - Named after the Mount Olympus in Greece, home of the Gods. Some say that the Utah mountain appears much like the Greek mountain. What do you think? Google pictures of the mountain and let us know.

Grandeur Peak - I could not find a good explanation of the name Grandeur Peak on the interneet. Do you happen to know why it's named that? A reasonable guess would be that someone thought it was very grand!

Pike's Peak - Named after famous explorer Zebulon Montgomery Pike (January 5, 1779 – April 27, 1813). Pike was the first to reach the summit of the peak that was later named after him.

Lone Peak - Was given the name Lone Peak because it sticks out from the rest of the mountains around it.

King's Peak - Named after Clarence King (January 6, 1842 – December 24, 1901) , a land surveyor and the first director of the United States Geological Survey

What else do you know about names of Utah's peaks? Let us know! We'd love to tap into your Utah mountain and skiing knowledge. If you need to know how to get to Park City from the Salt Lake airport, consider riding with a Utah Ski shuttle service.
